Marketing lessons I’ve learned over the years
Looking back at my career, there are a few key lessons that have stuck with me – lessons that have made all the difference when applied to marketing. Here are the top takeaways I want to share:
1. Don’t boil the ocean. Focus on what really matters
Before diving into campaigns, take a step back and ask yourself:
• Do we really understand the customers we serve? This is the most important factor. It can make or break everything we do.
• Do we really know what our strength is? Play to it – because that’s where we make the most impact.
• Do we truly understand our competitors? Not to be intimidated by them, but to pinpoint where we’re actually making a difference. Know where you can stand out.
2. You can’t matter to everyone, but you can mean everything to someone
We can’t be everything to everyone, and that’s okay. What’s critical is making bold decisions and focusing where we can really make a difference. Find the opportunities where you can mean the world to your ideal customer – and lean into them.
3. You can’t do it all, so focus on what hits the core
Do what aligns with what your brand stands for. Assuming you’ve defined that well (and it speaks to what’s relevant to customers and is differentiated from competitors), every action you take should amplify that core message. It’s not about doing more; it’s about doing what matters, with quality and consistency.
4. Go all in! Do it with passion
Here’s where the magic happens. Passion for your customers, your product, and the experience you deliver. When the people behind the brand genuinely care about making a difference – when they lead with empathy and love what they do – that’s when things truly start to take off.
Bottom line: stay focused, stay authentic, and never underestimate the power of truly understanding who you’re serving and why. Everything else follows from there.
